The Beekeepers Guild of Southeast Virginia is presenting a three-day Short Course for Beginning Beekeepers. 

Dr. Dewey Caron, Keith Tignor, and Dr. James Wilson along with local beekeepers will share how to get started keeping bees with an emphasis on sustainable beekeeping practices.

The course will be held on three (3) Saturday mornings, January 20, 27, and February 3 2024 from 8 am to 12:30 pm.

Pending weather and bee yard availability, an optional fourth Saturday, around April time period, will have an open hive demonstration in the bee yard with an equipment assembly demonstration. 

Course topics include:

  • Honey Bee Biology
  • Beekeeping Equipment
  • Seasonal Hive Management
  • Guild Mentor Program
  • Guild Nucleus Colony (Nuc) Program
  • Beekeeping Best Management Practices
  • Honey Bee Pests and Diseases

This course fulfills the educational requirement of six (6) hours of classroom instruction in introductory beekeeping training for the qualified level of the Virginia Master Beekeeper Program.

Tuition: $65 includes link to electronic MAAREC Beekeeping Basics handbook, and a FREE Guild membership from January 21, 2024 to June 30, 2024. A $20 tuition available for additional students in the same household not receiving reference materials.  Minor children must be accompanied by a paying adult.
